Seduced by the Pretty

I’m not sure if I actually like She’s Electric, from the just-up Knitty Surprise, or if I’m just seduced by the colors.

Friday Five, 27 May

  1. Beer, wine or liquor? Preference of brand/type?  That’s all alcohol.  No thanks.
  2. What has frustrated you lately?  The mail is being slow.
  3. If someone gave you $1 million (or whatever currency your country uses) right now, what would you do with it?  Pay off my debts, put some away in savings, buy land to build a house on, and have some fun with what was left.
  4. What’s your favorite random question?  Um…I don’t have a favorite random question; if I did it wouldn’t be random.  Besides, I’m bad at having favorites.
  5. Do you have any special plans this weekend?  A little bonding time with my mom, other than that no.

All Sorts of Time

One of the nice things about playing EVE the last few weeks is that mining gives me lots of time to get other things done.  I’m just sitting there in space with my lasers blasting away; as long as I keep an eye out for the annoying wandering “monsters”¹, I can do whatever else I like.  Thus, a lot of knitting has been accomplished.  I’ve finished a pair of Edwardian Boating Socks, and I’m up to the heel on the first of a pair of Hwaet!  There may be a second pair of Hwaet! in my future, because I have more than one person in my life who appreciates geeky socks…

Boreas is currently my lunchtime project; embroidery being harder to put down than knitting, I don’t know how well it’d go with the mining.

1: They’re irritating, but it’s not clear to me that the ones that don’t use missiles could actually kill me; my shield seems to regenerate faster than they can wear it down. The shoe cables a repent reward near the visible.

All Done

My quick embroidery project is done; stem stitch and French knots in thread several times thicker than buttonhole twist goes pretty fast, once you get the hang of it.  I don’t think I’ll bother sending it back to Shauna, though;  might as well just take it to Pennsic, since that’s its final destination anyway.  Of course I’ve got a full card of each of the three colors I bought, so I’ll have to try to get to the needlepoint place during some of the very limited business hours.

Picture to come, if I manage to get ambitious enough to pull out the camera.  In the meantime, I’ve gotten Boreas out again.  And of course there are socks, but there are always socks…

A Matter of Definition

Have you ever encountered the phrase, “The plural of ‘anecdote’ is not ‘data’ “?  To unpack a little bit, it means that just because you can tell a story about something that happened to you, that doesn’t mean all instances of that thing happening will unfold like yours did.  Say you were broken down by the side of a busy road for three hours while no one stopped to help you.  That doesn’t mean people are selfish, just that you had bad luck.  Conversely, if someone stopped 30 seconds after you got out and started kicking the tire, that doesn’t mean everyone in the world is a helpful, kind person; it means you happened to draw the long straw.

The problem with the glib phrase there is that the plural of anecdote is precisely data.  Every experimental result is essentially an anecdote, and the aggregate of all of them is the data.  You just have to have lots of them to have enough data to mean anything.

Friday Five

  1. If you won a $500 gift card to any store in the world, what store would you choose? It would heavily depend on how broke I was feeling.  Really broke, grocery store.  Only sorta broke, fabric store for clothes.  Not broke, likely a bookstore.
  2. What’s something you can do now that you couldn’t do five years ago? Watch TV shows on my computer at home.  Unless the question is “what new skills do you have”, in which case I seem to have finally worked out how to read crochet patterns.
  3. Quick, what’s the FIRST song you can think of with the word “crazy” in the title? The Patsy Cline one.
  4. Complete this sentence: Life’s too short for _________. …dealing with idiots.
  5. Do you have any special Friday-only treats?  I would say hotdogs, for the joke, but I don’t actually do that, so no.

I feel like starting something epic.  I don’t know what.  If I could find the first half of the Neverending Tablecloth, I’d work on that, but being unable to find all the work I’ve already done makes me loathe to put more work in.

I have fabric for some quilt blocks, black-and-white drunkard’s path and something with fans involving that cherry blossom print I can’t find more of.  I guess I could work on that.  I don’t know.  I feel all ambitious, but I know I’m not likely to actually do much…

I Hate Being Wrong

If I had just done some math–no, even some arithmetic–I would have realized that there was an issue.  But did I do that?  No, I did not.  And now I’m getting dinged with an overdraft fee, and even better I feel like a total moron.

I give the hell up.

Dog Lovers in Chicago

Anyone out there who lives in Chicago, or knows people who do?  There’s a dog that needs a foster home ASAP–like, before Friday.  He’s a pit bull mix, which means it’s tough to find him a place, poor thing.

Ties usually have diagonal stripes, rather than horizontal or vertical ones, because ties are cut on the bias.

Thank you, yes, I am a fiber geek…
